In addition to marrying a non-Japanese, based on his religious beliefs Gordon also filed as a Conscientious Objector just prior to the Vietnam War - this proved deeply troubling to Mom&Dad, in that their only knowledge of COs came out of WWII, where most went to prison - this was doubly a bad thing, in that going to prison would be a disgrace, and having such a mark against the family name would be cause for shame, neither acceptable in the Japanese culture....early on in this drama, however, Mom&Dad resolved the matter in their own hearts, and regardless of the possible outcome, chose to stand by their son - Gordon was granted CO status by a federal hearing judge on appeal, and served two years of alternative service, thus fulfilling his obligation to his country...
