| It was just after the fall semester ended in January of 1961 when Gordon graduated from the University of California in Berkeley that he and Barbara joined their hands and hearts and began their journey together. The wedding ceremony was held in the chapel of the First Methodist Church on Bancroft just across the street from the university, with the reception held in the Wesley Foundation Student Center adjacent to the church. The officiant was the director of the student center, Bill Porter, a former missionary who had served on a Methodist ministry in Japan a number of years previously. Not being an ordained minister, he officiated under Rev. Jerry Carter, friend and assistant minister at the Methodist Church there in Berkeley.
