Crest Cub Scouts ~ Food Drive

November 26, 2008

The Cub Scouts at Crest Elementary conducted a holiday food drive in cooperation with Food for Lane County, the local food bank in Eugene - actually it was the whole of Crest Elementary involved in gathering food, and on this day the Cub Scouts transported several hundred pounds of foodstuffs to the food bank over on Bailey Hill Road. Beth, wife of the Cub Scout Pack leader, led the group visitation to the food bank. Casey was one of the younger scouts, and Jiichan went along in place of Papa Paul for moral support...

The food bank has a paid staff, but more importantly has an impressive staff of volunteers who carry the bulk of the work load in handling and processing foodstuffs coming in, and going out...
The food bank has a large full-service kitchen, modern and bright and shiny with tons of stainless steel, and a two-stove complex affectionately named, Bonny and Clyde, where volunteers prepare meals for a number of programs across Eugene and Springfield. The warehouse sports several large walk-in freezers for storage, and receives food donations and left-over foods from various sources in the community, and prepares them for distribution to varioius programs serving the needy. We were told there is a Good Samaritan law on the books to protect food banks who accept food donations from law suits for possible health issues related to donated food. Some programs arrive here to pick up foods, while food bank trucks deliver foods to other programs...
