Spencer Butte

~ May 17, 2009 ~

On the 17th Paul called and asked if Granny and Jiichan would want to go on a hike up Spencer Butte with him and Teiya - He apologized for such short notice, but we said yes, and were picked up shortly thereafter. It was a short drive to the parking lot at the base of Spencer Butte, and after checking out the informational sign at the trail head, we began wending our way up the trail to the top. It was a cool day, which was pretty nice. The going was not an easy climb, and Granny made it to around the half-way mark, decided it best to not attempt the summit push and returned to the car and read til the rest of the team returned... The three of us continued our way up the trail, and toward the top the trail became more and more indistinguishable, and there were a lot of rocks to negotiate. Teiya did well with all this, and was more eager than the grown-ups appreciated as she hopped from one rock to another. Coming down later was worse, as momentum became a factor in our downward trek. The view at the top 360 was spectacular, and with only a minor haze over the valleys we could see fairly well across the Willamette River to the RiverBend Medical complex, and the big "O" on Autzen stadium. The native squirrels were friendly, the result likely of being fed by visitors...
